When political cartoonist Steve Benson purchased a home in the Phoenix suburbs an old fire pit was about the only thing in the backyard. He hired me to create a koi and lily pond in its place and create new gardens to surround it. 

I craned in mineral-encrusted boulders from the nearby Superstition Mountains for the waterfall, surrounded the pond with timber bamboo and pines and finished things off with a variety of flowering and evergreen perennials. 

When the water was balanced I added a dozen koi, water lilies, papyrus and purple iris. Pictured here is Steve with his pond three months after I finished it. Several years later it's another story altogether...
Stacked stones were used to create a short wall separating the flower beds from the grass and Arizona flagstone used for pathways throughout the garden. Leftover boulders from the waterfall created accents along the pathways; one of which led to a secret garden on the side of the house...
